The creative spaces and programs are managed by a group of dedicated UH students. Programs and services are open to all UH System students. Prior experience is not required.

General Rules

  • A PACE Maker Associate must be in the room at all times when equipment is being used
  • No one works alone
  • If you are unsure about anything, ask for help
  • Remove and secure anything that might get caught in moving machinery including jewelry (use the lockers in the hallway)
  • Leave all walkways and exits unobstructed
  • Clean as you go
  • No horseplay
  • No painted/stained objects or any hazardous material
  • No headphones and earbuds
  • No food or drink (except water)
  • No tampering with locks or safety devices
  • Report any accidents, malfunctions, or unsafe conditions immediately
  • Respect others’ work and space
  • Practice sustainable and responsible material use
  • Dispose of waste properly

While Using Machinery:

  • Only use equipment you have been trained to use
  • Safety glasses (ANSI approved) and closed-toed shoes are required at all times
  • Remain close and in control of any machine while it is running
  • Ask before cleaning, maintaining, or adjusting equipment.
  • Make sure materials are clamped securely and there is nothing that could fly out as the machine starts moving
  • Unauthorized access to restricted areas is prohibited

3D Printing Request

  • We offer free 3D printing services to UH students and faculty, with each individual receiving up to 1kg of filament as part of our Starter Pack. For additional printing needs, you may provide your own filament spools, but we only accept filament purchased from Bambu Labs.
  • Our facility currently operates four Bambu Lab printers.
  • Please ensure that your design fits within a maximum build volume of 256 x 256 x 256 mm.
  • Supports and orientation of print will by determined by a lab monitor unless specified within the form submission
  • All prints will be produced using black PLA filament.
  • We reserve the right to decline any print request.
  • Please allow for 7-10 business days to complete your request.

HANA RECORDING STUDIO

All UH students, faculty and staff are welcome to use our new recording studio in room 208 at the Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center. The studio is perfect for the solo artist, trio or podcaster. The studio is FREE to use and only requires users to complete a short training session! Read below on how to get started.

Care and Safety Protocols:

  • Studio Hygiene: Maintain a clean and sanitized studio environment.
  • Equipment Handling: Treat all equipment with care to avoid damage.
  • Cable Management: Properly secure and route cables to prevent tripping hazards. Do not unplug TV cables.
  • Ear Protection: Use ear protection when exposed to high sound levels.
  • Fire Safety: Familiarize yourself with all studio and building fire exits and fire extinguisher locations.
  • Guest Policy: Limit studio access to authorized personnel and guests who have completed the full online and in-person training.
  • Emergency Procedures: Be aware of emergency procedures and locations of first-aid kits.

Studio Guidelines:

  • Studio hours are available in blocks of 2-hour slots.
  • In order to use the studio facilities, users need to go through the online mandatory training, and subsequently attend one of the in-person training sessions to learn the basics of audio recording equipment in order to use the studio.
  • Do not move any piece of furniture or audio equipment out of the studio. There is no equipment borrowing. Reset the room to its default setting when done.
  • No food or drinks allowed in the room at any time. Those who wish to bring a sealed water bottle may do so, but they must be stored outside of the studio space at all times.

Guest Policy:

  • A “guest” is considered someone who has not completed training to use the Hana Recording Studio.
  • Guests are allowed to enter the recording studio with a UH member who has completed online and in-person training (“UH member”).
  • Guests may not handle any specialized recording studio equipment; this should be done by the UH member. Headphones and keyboards are ok.
  • The UH member will be responsible for making sure the guest uses the recording studio safely and responsibly.
  • The UH member will be held responsible for all actions of the guest.

How to get started

  1. Go to the Laulima site. 
  2. Read the overview page and complete the online training.
  3. Pass the online quiz (link provided in Laulima) with 100%. (You may retake it as many times as it takes to pass.)
  4. Then, a link to register for an in-person training session will be sent to your email. Register and attend.
  5. Once in-person training is complete; you can book 2 hour sessions in the recording studio!

Check in Process

  1. Check in at Maker Space 1 on the 2nd floor of the Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center.
  2. The Associate will verify your reservation, training status, and identity. They will collect UH ID cards from all users and will not return it until check out.
  3. The Associate will ask you to check the equipment and sign the checklist to confirm that you verify that all items are present.

Check out process:

  1. Before your time is up, return everything to its original location, tidy up and remove any trash.
  2. The Associate will check that all of the items on the checklist are present and in good condition.
  3. They will then return your UH ID cards.
