A LIVE-LEARN-WORK COMMUNITY FOR UH STUDENTS
In 2023, the Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center (RISE) opened its doors on the corner of University Avenue and Metcalf Street. This first-of-its-kind, $77 million, adaptive re-use project is an immersive, six-story, live-learn-work innovation community with 374 beds for student housing. PACE expanded into the 114,000-square-foot structure to offer and operate new programs, a co-working space, meeting rooms, classroom, recording studio and prototyping labs.
Highlights:
- RISE joins a group of cutting-edge universities in the U.S. as one of a handful entrepreneurial living learning communities at this size.
- The inaugural cohort of residents represent every college and school on the Mānoa campus and students from surrounding community colleges. A truly diverse ecosystem, residents hail from 8 different countries, 30+ states, and range from freshmen to graduate students.
- In addition to being an early adopter of this student housing model, RISE accomplished another groundbreaking feat: it is the first public-private partnership (P3) housing project at the University of Hawai‘i, and the first real estate project for UH Foundation. RISE is fully funded with private, non-taxpayer money.

UNLEASHING THE ENTREPRENEURIAL POTENTIAL OF STUDENTS
Drawing inspiration from Hawai‘i’s natural landscape and ocean, PACE’s innovation floor is adorned with various greens and blues and features a bold graphic mural with layered kupukupu ferns, an indigenous plant to Hawai‘i known for its strength and resiliency. The word “kupu” means “to sprout,” and true to its name, is often one of the first plants to return to the barren lava fields, demonstrating its tenacity in taking root in the harshest conditions. The kupukupu fern represents the heart and soul of PACE and the community it serves. Through the harshest conditions, it is the goal and aspiration of PACE to foster and “sprout” knowledge, growth, strength, resiliency and innovation right here in Hawai‘i and to share and collaborate beyond our shores.
RISE is designed to allow students to come together and explore their passions, solve complex problems, test their ideas, access support services, and launch companies within an environment that fosters collaboration, leadership, and entrepreneurship. All UH students—not just RISE residents— have access to PACE’s co-working space, meeting rooms, maker spaces, and educational programs which include mentorship, startup training, skills development, and funding.
