ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Mattson C. Davis was the founding President and CEO of Kona Brewing Company. As President/CEO of Kona Brewing Company, Mattson was responsible for the brand strategy, development of sales, and the building of two restaurants. One attached to the brewery in Kona (annual sales est. $11M) and the other on Oahu in the Hawaii Kai area (est annual Sales $7M). In the years since Mattson came onboard, the company has grown rapidly from 3,000 bbls to over 300,000 bbls today. Kona Brewing is Hawaii’s largest brewery and the 8th largest craft brewery in the United States based on 2016 sales figures. The beer is distributed throughout all 50 states and 27 countries. After a 9-year relationship with Craft Brew Alliance in brewing, sales and distribution the two companies merged in 2010. As of May 2015, Mattson is no longer an employee of CBA. He consults for them on a planned new 100,000 bbl brewery.

Since leaving Kona Brewing Company, Mattson has formed Ulu Development, business development and consulting company. Ulu Development believes that companies that grow sustainably and successfully are building the future of their people and their communities. Mattson desires to bring responsible concern for the community to his work with companies and leaders looking for the right road ahead. By assessing the gaps between where a company is and where it wants to go, Ulu then helps chart an actionable path forward, connects with the people and skills necessary for its success, and creates the energy and urgency to put it into action. By connecting leaders with the skills and people they need to build their company and community, Ulu Development helps get clients to the place where they can have the opportunity to make real decisions about how to make their business grow.

Aside from Ulu, Mattson is building a new restaurant called Magics Beach Grill in Kona and developing BREW, a 7-acre property under and around the Kona Brewing Pub. He lives full-time in Kona with his wife and two sons and considers himself lucky to call Hawaii home.
